Join us on a birdwatching tour in West Africa. The Gambia is a birding paradise with over 500 species recorded. Barry Macdonald will guide you throughout this tropical Ornithological journey in West Africa, Barry first went to The Gambia to carry out research on the birdlife, which included being based up river. He then lived in The Gambia and continued to lead birding tours for many years. We will be visiting various habitats along the coast. Including Abuko Nature Reserve where Giant Kingfisher, Lizard Buzzard Green and Violet Turacos can be found. Then we head up river to Georgetown near the River Gambia National Park in search of the elusive Egyptian Plover. This is also a very good area for raptors including African White-Backed Vulture, Grasshopper Buzzard and Lanner Falcon. Tendaba Camp is our next stop and we explore the mangroves by boat. Kingfishers are common, Goliath Heron and Brown Necked Parrot are also possible. Leaving Tendaba, we head back to the sunshine coast for our last couple of days birding. Visiting Cape Point, – Terns and Waders, Kotu Stream – Pied Kingfisher, Palmnut Vulture and Fajara Golf Course – Black Headed plover, Little Bee Eater.

Day 1
London to Banjul
Afternoon arrival at Yundum Airport where you will be welcomed by a Natoura Voyage representative and transferred to your accommodation at the Senegambia Hotel. We will have brief evening meeting at 7 pm  in the Senegambia reception to discuss the itinerary for the week. After the meeting we will have a group dinner. Overnight at the Senegambia Beach Hotel
Day 2
Abuko Nature Reserve – Lamin Lodge – Yundum
Today we will visit Abuko Nature Reserve, In 1967 wildlife officer Eddie Brewer and his daughter Stella Marsden visited the area and realised the conservation importance of the forest and its wildlife. Brewer made a request to the government for the area to be protected. Abuko is a great location, and with its Tropical Forest we have a great possibility of viewing the colourful Green Turaco and Violet Turaco, high up in the canopy. In addition Giant Kingfisher, Lizard Buzzard and White Crested Helmet Shrike.We will take a break for lunch at Lamin Lodge which is built on stilts and is located over looking the mangrove. In the afternoon we will take a walk through Lamin fields and Yundum. Here could see various Bee Eaters, weavers and oxpeckers.
Day 3
Tanji Bird Reserve – Tujereng
In the morning we will be birding at Tanji Bird Reserve on the coast, a great location for Slender – Billed Gull, Caspian Tern, Lesser Crested Tern and Sandwich Tern. Also Osprey, Long Crested Eagle as well as various waders. Lunch at Tanji Reserve. In the Afternoon we head for Tujereng a scrubby woodland habitat. African Golden Oriole, Yellow Penduline Tit, Black Wood Hoopoe.
Day 4
Banjul – Georgetown
Breakfast at Senegambia Hotel. Drive to Banjul, cross by ferry to the North bank. During the drive we will have frequent stops to scan for various birds such as Ground Hornbill and Raptors. Travelling along the North Bank road, main stop for Egyptian plover. Picnic lunch on route.
Day 5
Boat Trip – Sapu – Tendaba 
Breakfast at Baobolong Annex, then we take a boat from our camp to Sapu. On route we will be looking for various species including Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, White Faced Whistling Tree Duck, Long Crested Eagle. We will have lunch on the boat. In the Afternoon we will take a walk around the Tendaba area, which is a fantastic birding location. On a previous trip we recorded 100 new species during a morning walk before breakfast.
Day 6
Tendaba  – Banjul
This morning we will take a boat trip to the north bank of the River, drifting slowly through the mangrove creeks. Bird life is abundant with various species of Kingfishers, Waders, Ducks, as well as Senegal Thick Knee and hopefully Brown Necked Parrot. Lunch at Tendaba Camp. In the afternoon we drive back to the coast, making frequent birding stops.
Day 7
Birding along various coastal habitats
Early start from Senegambia 06.00am, arrive at Kartong at 07.00am. Breakfast at Kartong Morning birding around the Kartong bird observatory. We will have Lunch at Kartong. Afternoon boat trip at Kartong.
Day 8
Banjul - London
Breakfast at Senegambia. Morning birding in Senegambia Hotel gardens. Early lunch at the Senegambia. Afternoon transfer to Banjul Airport.
