South Luangwa is hailed as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and for good reason. The incredible concentration of animals around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa.
The Luangwa River, Africa’s most intact major river system, serves as the lifeblood of this 9,059 km² park. It is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with wildlife, birds, and striking vegetation. The renowned ‘walking safari’ originated here, offering one of the finest ways to experience Africa’s pristine wilderness firsthand. The park transforms with the seasons—barren bushveld in the winter gives way to a lush, green wonderland in summer.
With 60 different animal species and over 400 bird species, South Luangwa National Park is a treasure trove for wildlife lovers. Although the rhino has tragically been poached to extinction, the park boasts around 400 of Zambia’s 732 bird species, including 39 birds of prey and 47 migrant species, providing endless opportunities for birdwatching.
